Traveling for business is different than traveling for fun. But we probably didn’t have to tell you that. There’s a pretty clear line when it comes to work and vacation. But what about when it comes to your suitcase? The following packing lists will help you prepare for a variety of trip types, from work, to play, to family vacation.

Business Trips and Seminars
A successful business trip is an investment in your career. Your luggage should be as professional looking as your suit. It's important to know the business culture of the firm you are visiting. Dress can also vary widely from coast to coast. Pack clothes that will make your business hosts comfortable, and make you look like a pro.

Pack extra shirts or blouses in case of accidents, but you might be able to wear the same suit several times during your trip if you are going to be seeing different people each day. Make sure you've packed comfortable shoes if you're attending a trade show. Plan for some time to relax with your coworkers. Wearing your suit to an after-hours gathering looks standoffish.

Standard envelopes are useful for organizing receipts as well as correspondence. Buy a few manila envelopes in your hotel, use them to mail home any brochures you've accumulated, saving on packing space and weight on your return trip. A good garment bag or upright case will do best at keeping your business attire wrinkle free. Finally, call your hotel ahead of time to find out what they provide in the way of irons, ironing boards, hair dryers, etc. The less you need to carry, the better.

Family Tips
When you're bringing the children, have them try on their vacation clothing in advance. They can outgrow clothing fast. Hotels can often supply cribs and high chairs. Assemble a traveling version of your home first aid kit with items like childrens asprin.

Encourage each child to bring along an old familiar toy or video tape. It can be valuable when they're suddenly in unfamiliar surrounding. Bring the Car seat. It's still the law in rental cars. Bring some extra food. You can't rely on the airlines serving schedule matching your childs.

Duffles are good for packing childrens clothes since wrinkles aren't as much of an issue. Pack each days outfit into separate resealable plastic bags makes unpacking easy, and can also keep dirty clothes separate from clean. Travel packs are also good for parents with children since they leave your hands free.

Casual Vacations
Start by trying to cut your packing list down a bit. Bringing seven pairs of shorts for a seven day trip is probably excessive – you can probably do fine with three. Try to coordinate your wardrobe around two or three complimentary colors. This maximizes your useful wardrobe combinations. Rember to bring any specialized sporting clothing, even if you can rent the equipment at your destination.

Wheeled upright cases work well, as can duffles.

City Vacations
Cities tend to be more formal than rural areas, but unless you're there on business you can still dress casually. Wear comfortable walking shoes as you'll probably be spending a lot of time on hard pavement. Brogues and loafers can do double-duty as casual and dress shoes depending on what you wear with them. Women in particular should pay close attention to the fashion customs of foriegn cities.

City vacations are a good time to carry a variety of luggage. A small garment bag can carry dressier outfits, while a wheeled pullman carries the rest. Make sure your clothes will let you visit that great restaurant you want to try – but don't forget to call ahead for reservation!

Resort Vacations
Relaxation is the objective of your resort vacation. While on the resort grounds it's quite exceptable to spend the day in a bathing suit and T-shirt or cover-up. However, the evening usually requires a little more formality. Men can wear a long-sleeve shirt or polo and long pants, while women can wear anything from a sundress to a cotton pants suit. As with most trips, it's good to avoid large displays of jewelry.

Most resorts offer a variety of activities. Call ahead and find out what equipment is offered and decide what you'd like to bring with you. Then pack appropriate clothing.

If you plan to leave the resort to explore the surrounding town make sure you inquirer about the local dress and behavior codes because they may differ from the resort. Polo shirts and pants, sundresses or slacks andboat shoes or sandels are better suited for shopping in town. And of course don't forget the sunscreen and a hat.

For the more casual resorts duffel bags with your clothes rolled will do just fine. For the more formal areas use a light-weight garment bag and a suitcase on wheels.

Cruises
Cruise vacations require more clothing and more types of clothing than most trips. On the good side, once you unpack, your luggage can ride unseen in the ship's storage until you disembark at the end of your trip. Most cruise lines will issue a packing list for time spent on board as well as ashore. Casual sporty clothing is good for shore excursions. Remember a water bottle, a sun hat and a broken-in pair of shoes.

When on board you'll want a bathing suit, a cover-up and sun screen for the sun deck and pool. The cruise lines packing list will suggest how many nights will be formal, but you can expect at least two. That means evening gowns for the ladies and dark suits or tuxes for the men. Theme nights can also call for some preparation. On most other evenings, dress is semi-formal.

Pack your formal clothing in a garment bag and the rest in an upright case/ pullman or duffle. Also bring a day pack and sports equipment (such as tennis racks and golf clubs) for your shore excursions.
