Carry-On Luggage Packing Tips for Stress-Free Airport Experiences

Carry-on luggage is the type of baggage that you will bring onto the plane with you, as opposed to checking it, in which case it would have been stored in the luggage compartment of the airplane and will not be accessible to you after you have checked in for your flight, until you arrive at your destination.

Though you should check with your airline regarding any specific regulations for your carry-on luggage, the TSA permits one piece of baggage in addition to one personal item such as a handbag, a small backpack, a laptop computer case, a briefcase, or a camera case.

When you go through security at the airport, your carry-on baggage will be scanned with an x-ray machine. This will allow the security from the airport to determine whether or not all of the contents are allowable on the plane. That said, the actual maximum allowable size of the carry-on bag is determined by the individual air carriers, so you will need to check with that company to make certain that it fits the restrictions.

The TSA recommends that you keep a careful eye on all of your belongings at all times, as you are responsible for all of your possessions as they travel through the screening process.

The Transportation Security Officers will not allow you to bring a number of prohibited items aboard the plane in your carry-on luggage. Be certain to check the TSA website to discover the most up-to-date Prohibited Items List, to avoid facing struggles at the airport, in which you will need to remove the item from your baggage and either make alternative arrangements to ship it to yourself or relinquish it altogether.

Prohibited items include many sharp objects, tools, sporting goods, self defense and martial arts items, flammable and explosive materials, and disabling chemicals. There are also limits to the quantities of liquids that are allowed.

For carry-on bags, you are allowed a maximum of a 3.4 ounce (100ml) bottle sealed within 1 quart sized clear, plastic zipper seal bag. Exceptions include baby formula, baby food, breast milk, and medications, but they must be declared so that they can be inspected. When in doubt, it is recommended that you check any liquids that you want to make sure will arrive safely and not be removed.

Even if an item is not on the prohibited list, the security officers do have the right to declare an item as not-permitted. Therefore, it is worth your while to be very careful not to bring any items in your carry-on luggage that may be construed as questionable in any way. This will make your airport experience much more smooth and easy.
